The project

An ultralight, unbreakable road bike that knows its own condition.

Carbon. Dyneema. 3D-printed titanium connectors. An ultra-light, virtually unbreakable road bike frame, conceived and built in Limburg. Sounds like science fiction? For the Limburg consortium behind the 100% Limburg Bike, it was precisely the kind of challenge they were eager to take on. And they asked Veynex Embedded Software to make the bike smart too.

The challenge: unbreakable, yet invisibly safe

A bike that cannot break. It sounds like every cyclist’s dream. But what if, after a heavy crash or thousands of kilometres of fatigue, microscopic cracks still start to appear? Invisible to the eye, but a potential time bomb inside the frame. For a bike that carries the promise of being “unbreakable”, that is not an option.

Development of embedded technology, including in-frame sensors, Linux image and drivers, and a user-friendly interface for damage detection and monitoring.

Our role: the smart side

Within the consortium, Veynex took ownership of the embedded technology that truly makes this bike stand out — delivered on a fixed price, fixed timeline and fixed quality basis:
In-frame sensors: these detect whether invisible damage has occurred after a crash, impact or material fatigue. The bike reports it itself — before the rider can feel or see it.
Linux image and drivers: tailored to the specific hardware integrated into the frame, ensuring all components communicate and work together reliably.
User interface: making the data accessible to the cyclist. No hidden log files, but clear, actionable insight.

The result: a bike that is not only ultra-light and exceptionally strong, but continuously monitors its own condition.

100% Limburg

The name is no coincidence. The 100% Limburg Bike was developed at Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Sittard-Geleen, in collaboration with regional SMEs and knowledge institutions. Materials technology, sensor technology and ICT come together in one sustainable product: a showcase of what the region has to offer, and a strong example of how embedded software can make the difference, even in products that seem purely mechanical.

Beyond road cycling

The innovations behind this bike go far beyond Mont Ventoux. From safety and aerospace to automotive, wherever materials are pushed to their limits, embedded sensor technology can make the difference between hoping everything is still safe and knowing it is.

The result

A road bike that is not only ultra-light, exceptionally strong and innovative, but also continuously monitors its own technical condition. By bringing together materials technology, embedded software and smart sensor technology, the project resulted in a product that goes beyond traditional product development: an intelligent system where safety, performance and ease of use converge.

Through this contribution, Veynex once again proved that embedded software can make the difference, even in products that seem purely mechanical. From concept to realisation, delivered on a fixed price, fixed timeline and fixed quality basis.
